In a major escalation of the ongoing Middle East conflict, Iran has launched missile strikes on southern Israeli towns located near one of the country’s most sensitive nuclear facilities, leaving more than 100 civilians injured and raising serious global concerns.

The strikes targeted the cities of Dimona and Arad, areas situated in Israel’s Negev desert. Dimona is particularly significant as it houses Israel’s nuclear research center, making the attack highly sensitive from both military and global security perspectives.

According to initial reports, the attack took place late on March 21, 2026, when multiple Iranian missiles were fired toward southern Israel. Some of these missiles bypassed Israeli air defense systems, leading to direct hits on residential areas. 

Emergency services reported that over 100 people were injured, including children, with several in serious condition. Buildings were damaged, fires broke out, and rescue teams were deployed to search for people trapped under debris. 

 One of the most alarming aspects of the attack was its proximity to the Dimona nuclear facility. Although no damage or radiation leak has been reported so far, the incident has heightened fears about the risks of military activity near nuclear infrastructure.

Why did this happen?

Iran has described the strike as a retaliatory action following alleged attacks on its own nuclear sites, particularly the Natanz facility, which Tehran claims was targeted earlier. This reflects a growing pattern in the conflict—both sides are increasingly targeting strategic and high-value locations, rather than just conventional military positions.
