Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Assam's Barak Valley on March 14, 2026, to lay the foundation stone for the Rs 22,864 crore Guwahati-Silchar high-speed expressway. Announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, this ambitious project will slash travel time between Guwahati and Silchar from over eight hours to about four and a half hours.
Project Specifications
The corridor follows a four-lane, access-controlled greenfield alignment spanning roughly 167 km, with 145 km in Meghalaya and 22 km in Assam, from Mawlyngkhung near Shillong to Panchgram near Silchar. Approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs in April 2025 under a hybrid annuity model, it addresses frequent disruptions on the existing NH-06 due to landslides and monsoons.
Tenders are complete, wildlife clearances secured, and land acquisition advancing rapidly, paving the way for imminent construction. Sarma highlighted it as the central government's largest project in Assam, calling it a transformative initiative for regional growth.
Strategic Connectivity Boost
This expressway will enhance links not only within Assam but also to Tripura, Mizoram, and Manipur, easing access to mainland India for these northeastern states. Beyond the highway, Modi's visit includes inaugurating a new Silchar flyover to reduce urban congestion and follows recent environmental clearance for a greenfield airport at Doloo, pending final approval.
Political Timing Ahead of Polls
Marking Modi's third Assam visit in three months, the event aligns with preparations for state assembly elections in March or April 2026, ahead of the legislative term's end on May 20. It builds on last week's Rs 5,450 crore projects, including the Brahmaputra bridge and a new IIM, underscoring infrastructure focus.
"The decisions we make today will shape the world for generations to come."
