PM Narendra Modi’s ₹22,000 Crore Push: Transforming Gujarat and Daman Through Infrastructure and Connectivity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Gujarat and Daman on June 5, 2026, underscored his government’s sustained focus on practical development that directly touches people’s lives. By inaugurating and laying the foundation for projects worth nearly ₹22,000 crore, the emphasis was on enhancing connectivity, healthcare access, industrial capabilities, and tourism potential in these regions.

In Surat, projects totaling around ₹18,800 crore spanned road, power, and industrial sectors. Key highlights included dedicating Packages VI and VII of the 8-lane access-controlled Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway. This critical link improves high-speed travel and logistics between Gujarat and Maharashtra, reducing travel times, easing freight movement, and supporting trade in one of India’s most industrially vibrant corridors. Additionally, the foundation stone was laid for four-laning key sections of NH-56, which will better connect tribal areas and improve access to landmarks like the Statue of Unity, fostering inclusive growth.

Healthcare received a significant boost with the inauguration of a 200-bed ESIC Hospital in Surat. Equipped with modern specialties, a central laboratory, and 24/7 emergency and trauma care, it addresses occupational health needs in industrial zones while serving the broader community. Power infrastructure also advanced through transmission network expansions and distribution upgrades under schemes like the Revamped Reforms-Based Distribution Sector Scheme in areas such as Valsad. Industrial support came via effluent treatment facilities at Dahej PCPIR, Sarigam GIDC, and utilities at Jambusar Bulk Drug Park, promoting sustainable manufacturing and attracting further investment.

The visit to Daman added projects worth about ₹2,970 crore, blending immediate benefits with long-term vision. The new terminal building at NAMO Airport was inaugurated, promising better air connectivity to major cities and spurring economic activity in the Union Territory. The NAMO Hospital was dedicated, designed to handle around 1,500 OPD patients daily, markedly improving local healthcare access.

Foundation stones were laid for initiatives worth roughly ₹1,630 crore, including an iconic bridge, Daman Convention Centre, and NIFT campus. These aim to elevate tourism, create employment in hospitality and education, and position Daman as a hub for skills development in fashion and design. Complementary efforts extended to Lakshadweep with ₹885 crore for port facilities on Kalpeni and Kadmat islands, enhancing maritime links for passengers, cargo, and fishing communities while supporting cruise tourism.

These projects reflect a broader strategy of targeted, multi-sectoral development. Improved roads and airports cut logistical costs and open markets; healthcare and education facilities build human capital; and industrial utilities ensure environmental compliance alongside growth. In a region like Gujarat, already an economic powerhouse, such interventions amplify existing strengths. For Daman and similar areas, they bridge gaps in basic services and connectivity, creating a ripple effect on jobs, investment, and quality of life.

Observers note how these align with national priorities like ease of living and Atmanirbhar Bharat, integrating defence manufacturing reviews (such as at L&T Hazira) with civilian infrastructure. While challenges like timely execution and maintenance remain, the scale and focus signal continued momentum in India’s development journey, particularly in western states that contribute significantly to national GDP.

"The decisions we make today will shape the world for generations to come."
