Stock Market LIVE Updates: Sensex Drops 200 Points as Iran Hits US Bases in Jordan

Indian benchmark equity indices came under pressure on Monday, August 31, as renewed military tensions between the United States and Iran triggered a risk-off mood across global markets. The Sensex fell around 200 points in early trade, while the Nifty 50 also opened lower amid concerns over rising crude oil prices and the possibility of a wider conflict in the Middle East.

The latest escalation followed US strikes on two Iranian missile launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran subsequently said it had retaliated by targeting US military positions in Jordan. The developments have increased concerns about further disruption in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of global oil supplies normally passes.

Crude Oil Prices Surge

Oil prices jumped sharply following the fresh escalation. Brent crude rose above $90 a barrel in early Asian trading, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) also gained more than 2%. Higher crude prices are a concern for oil-importing economies such as India because they can put pressure on the rupee, inflation and corporate margins.

Asian Markets Also Under Pressure

The weakness was not limited to Indian equities. Asian markets traded lower as investors assessed the impact of the US-Iran conflict and higher energy prices. Japan's Nikkei 225 declined around 1.7%, while South Korea's Kospi fell nearly 1.8%. The negative global backdrop added to pressure on domestic indices.

Nifty Technical Levels

The Nifty 50 had closed at 24,175.65 on Friday, gaining 84.80 points. Analysts said the index remains vulnerable below the 24,300 level. Immediate support is seen around 24,075, followed by 24,000 and 23,900, while a sustained move above 24,300 could improve the technical outlook.

Stocks in Focus

Several stocks are likely to remain in focus during Monday's session, including HDFC Bank, State Bank of India, Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), Ola Electric Mobility, Piramal Finance and Hero MotoCorp. Company-specific developments could lead to additional volatility alongside the broader market weakness.

What Investors Should Watch

Investors will closely track developments in the US-Iran conflict, crude oil prices, the rupee-dollar exchange rate and global bond yields. With geopolitical uncertainty rising, analysts have advised a cautious approach, with stock-specific selection and disciplined position sizing becoming increasingly important.

The market's direction in the near term is likely to remain closely linked to movements in crude oil and any signs of de-escalation or further military action in the Middle East.
