August did not invent the Indian scooter. It only proved how many families still have no other way to move.

Ten manufacturers pushed a record 8.55 lakh scooters into dealerships last month. Autocar Professional’s industry tally prints 855,175 in the headline and 855,715 in the body; SIAM’s two-wheeler split, reported with the same year-ago base of 6,91,430, lands at 8,55,715 — up 24 percent on August 2025. Either way it is a new high. The old ceiling was October 2025 at 8.24 lakh. July had come within 1,810 units of eight lakh and stopped at 7,98,190. August walked through that wall.

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India took the monthly crown back. Factories dispatched 2,85,527 scooters, up 6 percent from 2,69,923 a year earlier, good for about 33 percent of the month. Almost all of that pile is still petrol: 2,83,485 Activa and Dio machines. The electric pair, Activa-e and QC1, added 2,042 units — a rounding error dressed as a transition. Honda’s share is the prize and the confession. A year ago it held 39 percent of August. The leader is selling more and owning less of the room.

TVS Motor Company did not collapse. It sent out 2,56,442 scooters, up 24 percent from 2,06,598, and kept a 30 percent share. Petrol Jupiter, Ntorq and Zest did 1,98,919, up 9 percent. The rest is the electric story TVS actually has: iQube and Orbiter carrying tens of thousands a month while Honda’s plug-in line barely clears two thousand. In July that EV muscle, plus a Honda slump, produced the upset — TVS at 2,56,675 against Honda’s 2,33,337. One month later Honda’s ICE river rose again. The war is not over. It has only returned to its usual bank.

Eight-month scooter volumes have already crossed 60 lakh. The calendar year is being talked toward 90 lakh for the first time. SIAM’s wider two-wheeler print for August is 20.35 lakh, up 10.5 percent. Motorcycles grew 2.4 percent. Scooters grew 23.8 percent. The incremental two-wheeler is a step-through, not a commuter bike. That is the social fact hiding under the press release.

Electric two-wheelers as a class cooled after July’s first crossing of two lakh. August retail in the e-2W bag was about 1.83 lakh, still far above last year, with TVS, Bajaj, Ather and Hero Vida doing most of the honest work. Industry notes put e-scooter wholesales near 1.89 lakh inside the 8.55 lakh scooter pile. So the record month is still a petrol month. Green India is a percentage point, not a replacement.

Festive season has begun on the calendar and in the speeches. Manufacturers loaded showrooms in August so September Navratri and October Diwali can look like demand rather than pipeline. The government will cut ribbons on “record auto sales” and “EV India.” Look at the machines. Honda, the volume king, barely sells an electric scooter. The state that toggles subsidies, argues over FAME leftovers, and cannot keep a bus on time has left the last mile to a 110cc CVT and a family of three. Every additional 8.55 lakh units is also 8.55 lakh more claims on lanes that already kill, on fuel that already fouls, on parking that does not exist.

This is not a lecture against the Activa. The Activa is what you buy when the metro is two transfers away and the office will not wait. The indictment is the system that calls that purchase a growth miracle. Roads stay cratered. Public transport stays a pamphlet. Charging stays a society fight. Honda’s 2,042 electrics in a 2.85 lakh month tell you how serious the industrial policy is when the cash register is ringing.

TVS will come again. Jupiter still eats Honda’s share one festival at a time. iQube is the reason July happened. If Delhi wants an electric scooter country it will have to stop treating a wholesale record as the finish line and start treating the 2,83,485 petrol Hondas as the problem that paid for the headline.
