Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has expressed strong dissatisfaction over the prolonged delays in the Mumbai-Goa Highway expansion, saying he is “ashamed” of the project’s execution and will not attend its inauguration.

According to the latest report, Gadkari said he would inspect the highway route in October and take action against contractors and officials responsible for poor execution and delays.

The Mumbai-Goa Highway expansion has been closely watched because of its importance to Maharashtra’s coastal connectivity. The project is expected to improve road travel between Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Goa, while also supporting tourism, trade and movement of goods along the Konkan region.

However, repeated delays have become a major concern. Gadkari’s decision to stay away from the inauguration highlights the seriousness of his dissatisfaction with the pace and quality of work.

The Union minister has indicated that accountability will be fixed for the delays. His planned inspection in October is expected to provide an opportunity to review the progress of the remaining work and assess whether contractors and officials have met the required standards.

The development has once again brought attention to the challenges involved in executing large-scale highway projects, particularly in regions where difficult terrain, monsoon conditions, land-related issues and construction constraints can affect timelines.
