Delhi Building Collapse: Owner’s Son, PG Operator and Contractor Sent to Two-Day Police Custody

A Delhi court has remanded three accused — the son of the building owner, the paying guest (PG) operator and a labour contractor — to two days of police custody in connection with the deadly building collapse in Satya Niketan.

The five-storey building, which was being used as student accommodation, collapsed during ongoing repair and construction-related work. The incident resulted in seven deaths, while several people were rescued from the debris. Authorities are investigating whether structural weaknesses, unauthorised construction and safety violations contributed to the disaster.

The three accused have been identified as Mahesh Gupta, son of the building owner, Sudhanshu, the PG operator, and Sanoj Kumar, the labour contractor. Police custody will allow investigators to question them about the building's management, repair work and circumstances leading up to the collapse.

Meanwhile, Mahesh Gupta’s parents, identified as Hariram Gupta and Urmila Gupta, have been sent to judicial custody. The police are examining the responsibilities of the owners, contractor and PG management as part of the ongoing investigation.

The tragedy has also prompted the Delhi government to consider stricter regulation of PG accommodations. Proposed measures include mandatory licensing, police clearance and structural and fire-safety certifications for PG properties.

The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities focusing on accountability and determining whether negligence or violations of safety norms played a role in the collapse.
