The Delhi High Court on Tuesday allowed activist Sonam Wangchuk to be shifted from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram.

A Division Bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia passed the order while hearing an appeal filed by Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo. The court directed immediate transfer, saying continuous medical monitoring is necessary and that moving him to the hospital of his choice would protect his fundamental rights.

Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike since June 28 at Jantar Mantar in solidarity with the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protests. The youth-led movement is demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over repeated examination paper leaks, including the NEET controversy, and related irregularities.

On July 18, Delhi Police shifted the 59-year-old activist from the protest site to Safdarjung Hospital after his health deteriorated on the 21st day of the fast. His family later approached the court, alleging lack of transparency in treatment and restricted access, and sought transfer to Medanta. A single judge had earlier declined interim relief on July 19.

During Tuesday’s hearing, the Bench interacted with doctors from Safdarjung Hospital, AIIMS and Wangchuk’s private physicians. Medical reports showed low potassium levels, critical total leukocyte count (TLC), and other parameter changes linked to prolonged fasting. Doctors agreed that constant hospital-based monitoring was essential.

The court ordered that all treatment details from Safdarjung be immediately shared with Medanta. The Director of Medanta has been directed to form a specialised panel of doctors to monitor and treat Wangchuk as per medical protocols. Wangchuk has been asked to comply with the prescribed treatment. His wife has been granted unrestricted access subject to hospital rules.

The Centre informed the court that it had no objection to the shift to Medanta but stressed that the activist should not be discharged against medical advice.

The High Court disposed of the appeal and the related petition after issuing these directions. The physical transfer is expected to take place as per the court’s immediate order.

The CJP protest at Jantar Mantar continues even as Wangchuk’s hospitalisation remains under close judicial and medical watch.
