PM Modi Revives Swadeshi Push Amid 7.8% GDP Growth, Urges Indians to Avoid Unnecessary Gold Purchases and Overseas Weddings

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday renewed his call for Swadeshi and self-reliance, urging Indians to prioritise domestic products and services as the country celebrates strong economic growth.

In a video message, Modi congratulated citizens after India recorded 7.8% real GDP growth in the first quarter of financial year 2026-27, describing the performance as a result of the collective strength and hard work of the people.

The Prime Minister particularly urged citizens to reconsider spending on foreign holidays, overseas destination weddings and unnecessary gold purchases. He encouraged people planning vacations to explore destinations within India and asked families to embrace the idea of “Wed in India” instead of holding weddings abroad.

Modi said that unnecessary purchases of gold should also be avoided, linking the appeal to his broader push for strengthening India's domestic economy. The emphasis, he said, should be on “Swadeshi” and “Vocal for Local”, so that more spending supports Indian businesses, tourism and services.

His remarks came amid continuing global uncertainty, including wars, geopolitical tensions and disruptions to supply chains. Despite these challenges, India recorded 7.8% growth in April-June, maintaining its position among the world's fastest-growing major economies.

Modi also said that sustained focus on self-reliance could help India move towards becoming a developed nation by the time the country reaches 100 years of Independence, creating greater opportunities for the younger generation.

The Prime Minister's latest remarks therefore combine India's strong GDP performance with a renewed economic message: spend more within India, support local businesses and strengthen domestic production to build a more self-reliant economy.

"The decisions we make today will shape the world for generations to come."
