RBI Cuts Repo Rate to 5.25% — Signals Boost for Growth, Revises FY26 Outlook Upwards

On 5 December 2025, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of RBI unanimously reduced the policy repo rate by 25 basis points (bps) — lowering it from 5.50% to 5.25%. Alongside the rate cut, the MPC decided to maintain a neutral policy stance, giving RBI flexibility for future decisions depending on economic developments.

Key Changes & Revised Forecasts

Repo Rate: Cut to 5.25% from 5.50%.

GDP Growth (FY26): Outlook upgraded from 6.8% to 7.3%, reflecting stronger growth expectations.

Inflation Forecast: CPI-based inflation outlook for FY26 revised downward — to approximately 2.0% (from earlier ~2.6%).

 Reasons Behind the Decision

Inflation in India remains at a historic low, giving RBI the leeway to ease rates without risking price stability.

Economic growth has shown strong momentum; recently India posted a healthy GDP growth — bolstering confidence for expansion.

With both stable inflation and robust growth, RBI called the situation a “rare Goldilocks period” — making this an opportune time for supporting growth via easier credit.

Implications for Borrowers, Savers and Economy

Borrowers — be it home loans, auto loans or personal loans — are expected to get relief as lending rates fall, likely reducing EMIs.

Potential for a surge in consumer demand and investment activity, as cheaper credit might fuel spending in real estate, automobile, business expansion.

For savers and fixed-deposit investors, interest rates may go down — which might translate into lower interest earnings on deposits.

Overall economic sentiment may brighten — with stronger credit flow and investment potential propelling sectors reliant on borrowing and demand.

RBI’s Balanced Stance: Room for Caution

Though the rate cut signals accommodation, RBI has retained a neutral stance, indicating it is not committing to a continuous lowering cycle. Instead, future decisions will depend on incoming data on inflation, growth, global economic conditions, and currency / external sector stability.

 Broader Significance

This move — among several cuttings in 2025 — highlights RBI’s shift toward supporting growth as inflation softens. For India’s macroeconomic environment, lower borrowing costs and an optimistic growth outlook could help sustain demand, encourage investment, and ease debt burdens — especially for households and businesses relying on loans.
