The familiar concrete blocks and iron barricades are back at the Shambhu border. On 21 July 2026, Haryana Police sealed the key Punjab-Haryana crossing once again as thousands of farmers under the Desh Bachao Morcha banner began a march toward Delhi. Their target: a proposed India-US trade agreement they believe will open the floodgates to cheap American agricultural and dairy products and push Indian cultivators deeper into crisis.

The convoy left Gurudwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib early in the morning after prayers. Farmers travelled in buses, jeeps and private vehicles rather than the tractor cavalcades of earlier agitations. Their planned destination was Kisan Ghat in the capital for a four-hour peaceful mahapanchayat. Instead, they ran into a fortress of multi-layered barricades, cement slabs and heavy deployment at Shambhu. Traffic on the highway was halted in both directions. Similar security was tightened at Singhu as well.

Farmer leaders, including Sarwan Singh Pandher of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, have made their position clear. They want the trade deal cancelled. Their central fear is that unrestricted or low-duty imports of US maize, soybeans, cotton and dairy products — often produced with heavy subsidies — will crash domestic prices. Punjab and Haryana farmers, already struggling with high input costs and uncertain markets, say this would devastate incomes for cultivators, dairy producers, livestock rearers and small traders. Some groups have also raised concerns about genetically modified crops and the long-pending demand for a legal guarantee of minimum support prices.

The government side has not publicly released the full text of any draft agreement, which has only deepened suspicion. Officials have previously maintained that sensitive sectors would be protected, yet farmer unions argue that past trade negotiations have shown how agriculture often becomes a bargaining chip. The sealing of the border itself has become part of the political theatre. Leaders accused the Haryana administration of choosing confrontation over dialogue, even as ordinary commuters faced disruption.

By afternoon, talks between farmer representatives and the Haryana Agriculture Minister produced limited movement. Two demands — the release of detained leader Gurnam Singh Charuni and facilitation of a meeting with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan — were reportedly accepted. Leaders said the next course of action would be decided after internal discussion. Whether this cools the immediate temperature or merely postpones a larger confrontation remains unclear.

This is not an isolated flare-up. It arrives against the backdrop of repeated farmer mobilisations over the past several years and a broader sense that rural India feels sidelined in high-level economic diplomacy. When a trade negotiation with a major power is perceived as threatening the one sector that still employs the largest share of the workforce, the reaction is predictable. Sealing borders may stop a day’s march. It does not answer the underlying anxiety about who will protect Indian agriculture when global market forces arrive at the farm gate.

The farmers who reached Shambhu today carried a simple message: any deal that sacrifices domestic producers for diplomatic or corporate gains will be resisted. How the Centre responds — with transparency, genuine consultation or further fortifications — will determine whether this remains a one-day sit-in or the opening chapter of another prolonged standoff.
