Sonia Gandhi Questions Centre’s Silence on Khamenei’s Death, Brings Kashmir Into Debate

Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has strongly criticized the Central Government over its response to reports surrounding the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Calling the Centre’s silence “deeply concerning,” she argued that remaining quiet on such a significant global development cannot be described as diplomatic neutrality.

In a public statement, Sonia Gandhi said India shares long-standing civilizational and strategic ties with Iran, and therefore the government must articulate a clear and balanced position. She emphasized that foreign policy should reflect both national interest and moral clarity, especially during periods of global instability.

The Congress leader also linked the issue to developments in Kashmir, where protests were reported following international reactions to the Iranian leadership crisis. She stated that domestic stability and foreign policy cannot be viewed in isolation, suggesting that global events often influence regional sentiments.

The Central Government, however, has maintained that it is closely monitoring the situation and prefers measured diplomacy over immediate public commentary. Officials indicated that India’s priority remains regional peace and the safety of its citizens abroad.

Political observers note that the debate highlights broader disagreements between the ruling party and opposition over India’s foreign policy direction. While the government defends strategic restraint, the opposition argues that silence on critical global matters may send mixed signals internationally.

As tensions in West Asia continue to evolve, the issue has added another layer to the already charged political discourse within India.

"The decisions we make today will shape the world for generations to come."
