On Wednesday morning, a devastating aviation accident in Baramati, Maharashtra, claimed the life of one of the state’s most influential political leaders, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, along with several others aboard a chartered aircraft.

The aircraft — a Bombardier Learjet 45 (registration VT-SSK) operated by private charter provider VSR — was flying from Mumbai to Baramati when it crash-landed near Baramati Airport during an attempted landing around early morning hours. Officials report that the plane lost control close to the runway and burst into flames upon impact. 

According to initial civil aviation reports, five people on board were killed, including Ajit Pawar, two crew members, and members of his personal security detail.
