India strengthened their grip on the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle after bowling the hosts out for 284 on Day 3. Having posted 462 in their first innings, India secured a substantial 178-run lead and are now targeting an even bigger advantage in their second innings.

The spotlight remains on Yashasvi Jaiswal, although the opener endured a disappointing start to the Test after being run out for 32 following a mix-up with KL Rahul on the opening day.

India's first-innings total was built around a superb maiden Test century from Devdutt Padikkal, who scored 167. KL Rahul contributed 82, while Dhruv Jurel also made a useful 51 as India crossed the 450-run mark.

Sri Lanka showed resistance through Sonal Dinusha, who scored his maiden international century, and Niroshan Dickwella, who made 80. However, India's spin attack eventually took control, with Manav Suthar claiming four wickets and Ravindra Jadeja taking three.

With the Galle pitch expected to become increasingly helpful to spinners as the Test progresses, India have a strong opportunity to set Sri Lanka a daunting fourth-innings target. Rain interruptions, however, could influence India's declaration plans and the amount of time available to force a result.

India will look to score quickly in the second innings, put Sri Lanka under scoreboard pressure and give their bowlers sufficient time to attack. A strong contribution from Jaiswal at the top could further strengthen India's position as they push for victory in the opening Test.
