A 40-year-old New York Times executive was fatally shot in Dublin, California, over the weekend, with police arresting his two elderly in-laws in connection with the killing.
Jonathan McKinsey, who worked as director of engineering for New York Times Games, was found with gunshot wounds in a parking lot at the Dublin Sports Grounds on Saturday. Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene. His in-laws, 77-year-old Shouyong Zhang and 77-year-old Shili Chen, were arrested nearby on suspicion of murder.
The killing occurred against the backdrop of a contentious divorce between McKinsey and his wife, Candice Jang. Court records and media reports indicate that both sides had made allegations of domestic abuse and had sought protective orders against each other. The circumstances and motive behind the shooting remain under investigation.
McKinsey was transgender and had alleged in court filings that members of his wife's family had subjected him to anti-LGBTQ+ slurs. He also made allegations concerning abuse during medical procedures related to his transition. These allegations are part of ongoing court records and should not be treated as established findings.
At the same time, Jang had previously accused McKinsey of domestic abuse involving her and their three children. Court records show that she obtained a domestic-violence protection order against him last year, while McKinsey later sought his own protective order and filed for divorce.
McKinsey joined The New York Times in January 2023 and worked in the company's Games division. The newspaper confirmed his employment but declined to provide further comment on the case.
Police have said there are no additional suspects and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation into the shooting and the events that led to it continues, while the two arrested suspects were expected to appear in court.
