Actor Imran Khan Gets Interim Relief from Bombay High Court in 'Leave India' Notice Case

Mumbai, October 27, 2026: Bollywood actor Imran Khan has received interim relief from the Bombay High Court in his legal challenge against a notice directing him to leave India by October 28. The court has kept the notice in abeyance until the next hearing, scheduled for November 2, after the Centre assured that no coercive action would be taken against him in the meantime.

Bombay High Court Grants Temporary Relief

The case was heard on Tuesday, October 27, before a division bench of the Bombay High Court. The matter was adjourned after the Centre sought additional time to present its arguments.

The government's representative assured the court that no coercive steps would be taken against Khan before the next hearing. The court's decision means the actor will not have to leave India by the October 28 deadline while the interim protection remains in effect.

Why Was Imran Khan Asked to Leave India?

The controversy began following an incident on October 10 near August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai, where Khan was briefly detained by police amid a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The demonstration was linked to concerns surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

On October 14, the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) issued a Leave India Notice directing Khan to leave the country by October 28. The authorities cited alleged violations of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.

Actor Challenges the Notice

Khan approached the Bombay High Court, challenging the legality of the notice. In his petition, he argued that the order was arbitrary and had been issued without giving him a proper opportunity to explain his position.

The actor has denied having any association with the organisers of the protest. He has maintained that he visited the area out of curiosity and was not actively involved in organising or mobilising the demonstration.

Khan, who holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card and is a US citizen, has also highlighted his longstanding personal, family and professional ties to India. His petition seeks the cancellation of the notice and protection against coercive action while the legal proceedings continue. These are claims made in his petition and have yet to be finally adjudicated.

Next Hearing Scheduled for November 2

The Bombay High Court is scheduled to take up the matter again on November 2. Until then, the notice remains on hold under the interim arrangement, following the government's assurance that no coercive action will be taken against the actor.

The next hearing will determine how the legal challenge proceeds. The court has not yet delivered a final ruling on the validity of the Leave India Notice.

The case continues to draw attention as it raises questions about immigration rules, OCI status and the legal procedures that authorities must follow when directing a foreign national to leave India.
