Anthropic's release of 11 open-source plugins for its Claude Cowork platform has ignited a massive market rout, erasing around $285 billion from software, legal tech, and IT services stocks in one session on February 3, 2026. The tools automate key workflows like contract reviews, compliance, and sales, shifting investor views of AI from enhancer to direct competitor for traditional SaaS and outsourcing models. Analysts dubbed it the "SaaSpocalypse," with Jefferies' Jeffrey Favuzza noting frantic "get me out" selling.
US markets absorbed the heaviest initial blow, as Goldman Sachs' software stock basket dropped 6%—its worst day since April 2025 tariffs. The Nasdaq Composite shed 1.4%, losing $300 billion in market cap, while the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF fell 4.6%, marking six straight losing days after a dismal January. Legal tech firms suffered most: Thomson Reuters plunged up to 21%, London Stock Exchange Group dropped 13%, LegalZoom 19%, and CS Disco 12%. Piper Sandler downgraded Adobe, Freshworks, and Vertex, citing AI-driven "seat-compression" risks that cap valuations.
The shock rippled to Indian IT giants on February 4, with the Nifty IT index crashing nearly 7% and wiping out Rs 1.75 lakh crore in value. Infosys and LTIMindtree each fell over 8%, TCS and Persistent Systems about 7%, HCL Tech around 6%, and Wipro over 4%. Investors fear Anthropic's plugins—covering legal, sales, finance, marketing, and support—could displace outsourced work long dominated by India's labor-arbitrage model, potentially costing the sector 30% market share without rapid AI pivots.
Anthropic launched the plugins on January 30 as no-code agents for complex tasks, stressing the legal tool offers no formal advice and requires attorney review. Yet markets see an existential pivot: AI evolving into infrastructure that bypasses human intermediaries and legacy software. Indian firms face a stark choice—adapt via AI architecture for high-value problems or face obsolescence—especially with Anthropic's planned Bengaluru office signaling deeper local engagement. Key metrics ahead include plugin adoption rates and IT earnings shifts toward AI services over basic labor.
