Nepal President Ram Chandra Paudel has thanked India for its “generous support and solidarity” following the devastating flash floods that struck Nepal on August 26, 2026. The disaster has caused extensive loss of life and widespread destruction across several parts of the Himalayan nation. 

In a message to Indian President Droupadi Murmu, Paudel expressed his deep gratitude for India's concern and humanitarian assistance during the crisis. He also conveyed condolences to the Indian government and people over the deaths of Indian nationals in the disaster. 

India Steps Up Relief Efforts

India has responded quickly by sending emergency relief supplies and medical assistance to Nepal. The third flight carrying relief material reached Kathmandu on Friday, with supplies handed over to Nepalese authorities. India has also deployed an 11-member medical and tunnel-rescue team to support ongoing relief operations. 

Earlier, India dispatched 10 tonnes of humanitarian assistance and essential medicines, while subsequent consignments increased the overall relief support. The assistance is aimed at helping affected communities with emergency supplies and supporting rescue operations. 

Massive Humanitarian Crisis

The flash floods, reportedly triggered by a glacier collapse and avalanche in the Himalayan region, sent huge volumes of water, mud, rocks and debris through river valleys. The disaster has severely damaged roads, bridges, hydropower facilities and settlements. 

According to Nepal's latest disaster-management figures reported on Saturday, the death toll had reached 626, while thousands of people remained missing. Rescue operations have been complicated by difficult terrain, damaged infrastructure and continuing risks in the affected areas. 

Strong India-Nepal Solidarity

Paudel's message highlights the close ties between India and Nepal and the importance of regional cooperation during natural disasters. India's relief operation, including the delivery of emergency materials and deployment of specialist teams, has provided crucial support as Nepal continues rescue and recovery efforts.

With the humanitarian situation still critical, Nepal is seeking international technical and reconstruction assistance as authorities begin assessing the enormous damage caused by the floods.
