Apple waited until the hinge felt like jewellery and the crease almost disappeared. Then it charged India as if the crease were still a national monument.

The iPhone Duo is real. Announced on 9 September 2026 at Apple Park, it is the first foldable iPhone: a book-style slab that shuts to passport size and opens into the largest screen Apple has ever put on a phone. Pre-orders open in India at 5:30 pm IST on Friday, 16 October. Shelves go live on Friday, 23 October, in the first wave of more than 70 countries. Another 28 markets wait until 30 October.

Closed, it measures 117.8 mm tall, 84.1 mm wide and 11.3 mm thick. Open, it stretches to 164.6 mm wide and thins to 5.2 mm — Apple’s thinnest iPhone when unfolded. Weight is 254 grams. The frame is grade-5 titanium with a mirror polish. Ceramic Shield sits on the back; Ceramic Shield 2 covers the outer glass. Apple rates it IP68, tested to 6 metres for 30 minutes, a claim no rival foldable has matched with the same confidence. Two colours only: Star White and Night Sky.

The outer panel is a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR display, 1398 × 2034, about 460 ppi. Apple says it holds 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro in a much smaller body. Open the hinge and a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR inner panel takes over — 1878 × 2670, about 430 ppi, nano-texture to kill glare and mute the crease. Both screens share the same 1:1.4 aspect ratio, both run ProMotion up to 120 Hz, both stay Always On, both peak at 3,000 nits outdoors. Content is meant to scale instead of jump. An under-display FaceTime camera hides in the inner glass. The outer face carries a 12 MP Center Stage camera.

There is no Face ID. Unlocking lives in a side-button Touch ID that works open or shut. Apple Watch can still wake it. That is the compromise of a folding face: no room for the old TrueDepth stack.

Inside sits the same A20 Pro found in iPhone 18 Pro — TSMC 2 nm, 6-core CPU (up to 20 percent faster than A19 Pro), 7-core GPU (up to 40 percent faster), dual 16-core Neural Engine, 12 GB of memory. A vapour chamber is bonded to the package so two screens do not cook the silicon. Apple claims up to 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro. Storage starts at 256 GB and climbs through 512 GB and 1 TB to 2 TB. No card slot. eSIM only, worldwide.

The rear cameras are a pair of 48 MP Fusion sensors: a wide at f/1.6 with sensor-shift OIS and an optical-quality 2x crop, plus an ultra-wide at f/2.2 with macro. There is no dedicated telephoto and no variable aperture like the 18 Pro. Video reaches 4K at 120 fps in Dolby Vision. Software tries to make the fold earn its keep — Duo Preview puts a live frame on the cover so the subject can see themselves, Kid Cue plays Peanuts clips to hold a child’s gaze, Smart Take lets the phone decide the moment. USB-C Apple Pencil support is promised later in the year, not on day one.

Two batteries sit either side of the hinge and behave as one pack. Apple’s numbers: up to 31 hours of video on the inner screen, 44 hours on the outer screen, about 24 hours if both get equal work. Wired charging hits 50 percent in around 20 minutes with a 60 W-class USB-C adapter. MagSafe or Qi2 wireless needs about 30 minutes for the same jump. Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Apple’s C2 modem, USB-C, satellite messaging where the carriers allow it.

iOS 27.1 arrives with the device. Split View finally treats an iPhone like a small tablet: two apps, two windows of one app, saved pairs. StandBy works on either face. Netflix, Zoom and Slack already rebuilt layouts for the hinge. That software story is the honest part of Apple’s pitch. The hardware is late to a category Samsung has been iterating for seven years. The software is the reason some people will still pay.

Now the price, which is where the story stops being a gadget brief and becomes a portrait of the system.

Convert $1,999 at current rates and you land near ₹1.90 lakh before American state tax. India asks almost ₹3 lakh for the same 256 GB slab. Analysts who peel the onion — 18 percent GST stacked after customs on a completely built import — still leave Indian buyers staring at a six-figure premium on the sticker. The Duo is not assembled here yet. Make in India speeches did not reach the hinge, the foldable OLED, or the 2 nm chip. Those parts arrive as a finished object, and the state treats that object as a luxury to be milked.

This is the true face of the arrangement. Ministers cut ribbons at phone plants and talk of a digital superpower. The same machinery then slaps duty on a device most households will never touch, applies GST on the inflated value, and calls the result “affordable aspiration.” A teacher in Bengaluru, a nurse on night shift, a small trader paying UPI charges all month — they fund the spectacle. A thin titanium book that opens into a 7.6-inch theatre is sold to them as progress while public hospitals ration beds and city roads flood on schedule.

Apple is not a charity. It prices for margin and myth. The government is not a bystander. It designed the tax stack, celebrated the assembly lines that do not yet build this model, and left the buyer to absorb the difference. Two screens. One country that taxes the second one as if it were a villa.

If the Duo is the most important iPhone since the first one, the invoice is the most honest document in the box. Pre-order on 16 October. Pay on 23 October. Keep the receipt. It explains more about the republic than the keynote did.
