Samsung Called It Leftovers. Then iPhone Duo Made Galaxy Z Fold 8 Taste Stale

The Fold 8 is lighter, cheaper and already in stores. Four days after Apple’s keynote, owners are asking why an eighth-generation foldable still feels like homework.

Samsung Called It Leftovers. Then iPhone Duo Made Galaxy Z Fold 8 Taste Stale

Samsung spent seven years teaching the world how a phone should fold. Then Apple showed up with a first attempt, and the classroom turned on the teacher.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has been on Indian shelves since early August. It is not a rumour and not a concept. It is 201 grams of Flex Titanium, 4.5 mm thin when open, 9.7 mm when shut, with a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X inner panel and a 5.5-inch cover screen. Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy. Twelve or sixteen gigabytes of RAM. Dual 50-megapixel cameras. A 4,800 mAh pack. One UI 9 on Android 17. DeX if you want a desk. Three apps at once if you want a circus. Physical SIM if your carrier still lives in 2018. Face unlock. Four colours. Starting price in India: ₹1,79,999 for 12 GB + 256 GB, ₹1,99,999 for 512 GB, ₹2,39,999 for 16 GB + 1 TB.

On paper, that machine still beats Apple’s new iPhone Duo in the places Samsung has always advertised. Fifty-three grams lighter. Thinner folded and unfolded. Already selling while Duo pre-orders wait until 16 October and boxes arrive on 23 October. In the United States the gap is almost polite — Fold 8 at about $1,899, Duo at $1,999. In India the gap is a sermon. Duo opens at ₹2,99,900. That is nearly ₹1.20 lakh more for the same storage class, a 67 percent premium that has nothing to do with silicon and everything to do with an imported slab meeting Indian customs and 18 percent GST.

Samsung knew the comparison was coming. Hours before Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event on 9 September, the company ran a “Welcome to Foldable” ad about thinness and weight. After the keynote, Samsung Mobile US posted the line that will follow this product for months: let us know when you are done reheating our leftovers. Another post called the Duo a Sims sequel. The internet laughed with them for an afternoon.

By Saturday the joke had flipped.

Hands-on clips of the Duo’s opening animation — wallpaper and interface sliding as one piece from the 5.4-inch cover onto the 7.6-inch inner glass — did more damage than any spec sheet. A developer on Reddit rebuilt that transition on a Fold 8 within hours. The hardware could do it. The software had never been asked. Ice Universe, usually a Samsung weather vane, said the quiet part: the company never treated everyday delight as a product requirement. Notebookcheck, PhoneArena and Digital Trends all ran the same autopsy in different accents. Samsung pioneered the hinge and then stopped designing the feeling of opening it.

That is the backlash. Not “Apple invented folding.” Apple did not. The sting is that an eighth-generation Fold still ships with homework the first-year iPhone already finished.

Look at the cuts Samsung made on the standard Fold 8 this summer. Flex Mode — the tent trick that made a half-open phone a tripod — was pulled from the wide Fold 8 and reserved for the Fold 8 Ultra and the Flip 8. S Pen support, which three-quarters of PhoneArena readers said they still wanted, stayed off the regular model. IP rating stayed at IP48: water is fine, fine dust is not. In Bengaluru construction season and Delhi’s dry months, that 4 in IP48 is not a footnote. It is sand in the hinge. Apple walked in with IP68, a claim Google already proved a foldable could carry, and suddenly Samsung’s “world’s lightest Fold” sounded like a company arguing about grams while the street argued about grit.

Cameras are a draw on the regular Fold 8 — 50 MP wide and 50 MP ultra-wide, no dedicated telephoto, same compromise Apple made with a 48 MP pair and a 2x crop. The Fold 8 Ultra is the actual camera phone in the family: 8-inch inner panel, 6.5-inch cover, 200 MP main, a real telephoto, 5,000 mAh, from ₹1,99,999. Duo does not answer that Ultra. It answers the passport Fold 8, and it answers it with titanium, Ceramic Shield, Touch ID in the side button, an under-display inner camera, nano-texture glass, and iOS 27.1 built around the hinge instead of bolted onto it. USB-C Pencil is promised later this year. Samsung used to own the stylus story on a folding slab and then rented it out.

Samsung still has the adult features Apple has not copied. DeX. Triple-window multitasking that is years ahead of iOS Split View. Reverse wireless charging. A taskbar that behaves. Pop-up windows. A cover screen that is slightly larger. Face unlock plus a fingerprint reader. More colours than Apple’s two-tone monastery of Star White and Night Sky. Those are real wins. They are also the wins of a company that kept adding buttons to a dashboard while Apple redesigned the drive.

The cruelest detail sits under both logos. Reporting out of Korea says Samsung Display is supplying the Duo’s foldable panel under a multi-year contract. Mobile tweets leftovers. The component division invoices Cupertino. That is not a conspiracy. That is a conglomerate doing what conglomerates do. It does make the roast look cheap.

India’s role in this fight is uglier than the spec war. Both phones are luxury objects. The Fold 8 at ₹1.80 lakh is not a people’s device. The Duo at ₹3 lakh is a customs receipt with a hinge. Samsung assembles more of its line in-country than Apple will for this first Duo, which is landing as a fully built import. The state still collects GST on both, still sells “Digital India” on hoardings, still lets dust and potholes define the daily test that IP48 will fail and IP68 might survive. Ministers will pose with whichever factory employs more people this quarter. Neither company is building a foldable for the nurse who needs a phone that survives a monsoon commute. They are building trophies for a tax bracket the government is happy to milk.

Samsung is not collapsing. Fold 8 sales were running ahead of Fold 7 in the United States a month after launch. The hardware lead in weight and maturity is not imaginary. The backlash is narrower and more embarrassing: after seven generations, the most shared clip of the week is an animation Samsung could have shipped and did not. A first-year iPhone made an eighth-year Galaxy look like it stopped being curious.

The Fold 8 is still the foldable you can buy this afternoon. The Duo is still a November problem for most wallets. Between those two facts sits the only review that matters this week. People stopped asking which hinge is older. They started asking which company still cares how the hinge feels.
