MEA Stamped “Fake Alert” on Sick Leaders. Pretoria Already Booked Its President Off

Viral posts claimed a BRICS illness cluster. South Africa confirmed Ramaphosa is unwell after Delhi. Xi stroke claims stay unverified. South Block issued a slogan, not a briefing.

MEA Stamped “Fake Alert” on Sick Leaders. Pretoria Already Booked Its President Off

The alert traveled faster than the communiqué.

By Thursday morning, feeds were carrying a single line: multiple world leaders had fallen ill after the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. The Ministry of External Affairs did what this government does when a story escapes the stage-managed hall. Its fact-check handle posted three sirens and two words. Fake Alert and told the country to treat the posts as malicious. That is not a medical bulletin. That is a reflex.

Here is what is actually on the record.

South Africa’s Presidency said on Wednesday that President Cyril Ramaphosa, 73, is booked off public engagements due to ill health. He returned from India on Monday. Doctors advised rest and recovery. Ministers will stand in where they can. Deputy President Paul Mashatile is separately recovering from a minor procedure. Pretoria did not invent a poisoning plot. It published a sick note. That is one confirmed head of government unwell after the Delhi trip—not “multiple,” not “none.”

The second thread is rumor-wearing a diagnosis. Wanjun Xie, who chairs the China Democracy Party, posted that Xi Jinping fainted during the summit, refused care in India, flew home, and was taken to Beijing’s 301 Hospital with an ischemic stroke. No Chinese ministry, no Indian hospital, and no independent medical record has confirmed a faint, a stroke, or an admission. Beijing’s own timeline undercuts the “cut short” part of that story. The foreign ministry had already said Xi would be in New Delhi on 12–13 September. He attended the opening session, sat with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, skipped the gala dinner, and left around noon on the 13th with Indian officials seeing him off—the itinerary was announced before he landed. A clip of Modi pausing mid-speech was spun as panic over Xi. Verification put it down to an earpiece, not a collapse.

So the viral sentence is sloppy. “Multiple leaders” is not what governments have jointly certified. One African presidency has. One Chinese opposition account has alleged a medical emergency that official calendars do not support. The rest is pile-on.

South Block still owes the country more than a red-siren sticker. It hosted an 11-member summit it sold as flawless statecraft. Weeks earlier, FSSAI had already flagged hygiene failures at luxury Aerocity hotels booked for foreign guests—expired stock, pest signs, and storage lapses. The gala dinner became a vegetarian culture war. Xi skipped the banquet and went to rest. None of that proves a cluster. All of it is why a single confirmed presidential illness plus an unverified Xi rumor became a wildfire. A government that inspects hotels in June and then pretends in September that nothing can go wrong at Bharat Mandapam is asking to be disbelieved.

Treat the “JUST IN” line as what it is: a rumor package wrapped around one official African statement. Do not write a bio-thriller. Do not swallow the MEA’s claim that the entire subject is fake. Ask Pretoria for a fuller note. Watch whether Xi appears on camera in Beijing. Demand that the host, which spent public money on a summit and a fact-check unit, publish a straight account of guest welfare instead of three emoji sirens.

Until then, the only leader whose office has said he is ill after India is Cyril Ramaphosa. Everything else is still a post.
